Indonesia and Sweden Sign Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Halal Certification
Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) and Sweden’s Scandinavian Halal Certification AB (SHC) have signed a mutual recognition agreement covering their respective halal certification systems.
Under the agreement, halal certificates will be mutually recognised in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations of Indonesia and Sweden.
BPJPH Head Ahmad Haikal Hasan said the agreement is intended to support greater efficiency in cross-border halal trade while maintaining halal quality assurance. He also said the cooperation forms part of BPJPH’s efforts to expand international cooperation in halal product assurance.
The agreement supports Indonesia’s objective of establishing internationally recognised halal standards. Hasan also highlighted the broader role of halal assurance in areas including transparency, traceability and product quality.
Swedish Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea and ASEAN Daniel Blockert said the agreement would contribute to strengthening economic ties between Indonesia and Sweden. He also highlighted the potential for wider cooperation on harmonised halal standards involving ASEAN members.
Aso Asinger, Chief Executive Officer of Scandinavian Halal Certification AB, described the agreement as an important development for the certification body and said recognition as a BPJPH-approved halal certification body would support bilateral trade opportunities.
Under the arrangement, SHC will conduct halal certification according to BPJPH standards, implement the Halal Product Assurance System, and carry out surveillance and verification of halal production.
SHC will also be required to submit regular reports, upload certificate information to BPJPH’s SIHALAL system and ensure that exports to Indonesia comply with Indonesian regulations.
BPJPH, meanwhile, will recognise halal certificates issued by SHC within the scope established through accreditation and conformity assessments.
