AAOIFI and KFU Sign Agreements to Strengthen Islamic Finance Education
Kazan Federal University (KFU) and the AAOIFI Centre for Islamic Finance Development have agreed to establish AAOIFI examination and training centres at KFU, expanding access to professional qualifications and education in Islamic finance in Russia.
Kazan Federal University and the AAOIFI Centre for Islamic Finance Development have signed agreements to develop cooperation in the field of Islamic finance education and professional training.
The agreements were signed on 30 June 2026 during the international scientific and practical conference Modern Business Education: Russia and the World, held at Kazan Federal University.
According to KFU, the initiative will establish AAOIFI examination and training centres at the university’s Institute of Management, Economics and Finance.
AAOIFI Examination and Training Centres at KFU
The cooperation will provide a local platform through which students, professionals and other interested participants in Russia can access AAOIFI-related professional education and certification.
KFU stated that the establishment of the centres will allow Russian students and specialists to gain access to international certification in the field of Islamic banking.
The AAOIFI Centre described the initiative as part of its broader efforts to expand professional capacity and education in partnership finance across Russia and the CIS region. Its published information states that the cooperation will support access to AAOIFI professional qualifications, capacity-building programmes and specialised education.
Cooperation in Islamic Finance Education
The agreement brings together KFU’s academic infrastructure with AAOIFI’s professional standards and qualification framework.
KFU’s Institute of Management, Economics and Finance already provides education and training in economics and management. The new cooperation creates an additional channel for Islamic finance-related professional development within the university.
The initiative is also consistent with AAOIFI’s wider focus on developing professional expertise alongside the implementation and understanding of its standards.
Expanding Access to Professional Qualifications
For students and finance professionals, access to examination and training facilities within a university can reduce the practical barriers associated with pursuing international professional qualifications.
The AAOIFI Centre has said that the cooperation is intended to support professional qualifications and competency development in partnership finance, particularly for students, specialists and financial-market participants in Russia.
The exact programmes, examination schedules and training arrangements available through the new centres will depend on their subsequent implementation.
KFU’s Existing Cooperation with AAOIFI
The new agreements build on an existing relationship between KFU and AAOIFI.
KFU previously reported cooperation with AAOIFI in the field of Islamic finance, including AAOIFI-related academic and professional initiatives. In its 2025 announcement, KFU said it had become the first university in Russia to receive AAOIFI accreditation for its master’s programme in Audit and Financial Management, and that the university had been granted AAOIFI-affiliated university status.
AAOIFI also announced in 2022 that it had signed an MoU with Kazan Federal University covering areas including academic mobility, cooperation between teaching and research staff and students, joint research, academic courses, seminars and conferences.
Industry Impact
IFD Editorial Insight: The development of AAOIFI examination and training centres at KFU represents another step in the institutionalisation of Islamic finance education in Russia.
For an emerging Islamic finance market, education and professional capacity are important alongside regulatory and financial infrastructure. Providing access to recognised professional qualifications through a university-based centre can help connect academic education with professional development.
The initiative is also notable from a regional perspective. With the AAOIFI Centre for Islamic Finance Development operating in Kazan, cooperation with KFU provides an academic channel for developing Islamic finance knowledge and professional skills in Russia and potentially the wider CIS region.
The longer-term impact will depend on how the examination and training centres are implemented, the programmes offered, and the number of students and professionals who eventually use them.
What This Means for Islamic Finance Professionals
The cooperation could provide Russian students and finance professionals with greater local access to AAOIFI professional qualifications and training.
For universities, it also illustrates how academic institutions can collaborate with international Islamic finance standard-setting and professional organisations to develop specialised education and professional capacity.
Further details regarding specific AAOIFI qualifications, examination dates and training programmes at KFU will be important for prospective candidates as the centres become operational.
