Qatar Awqaf Registers 58,988 Shares as New Endowment Investment
Doha, Qatar — 25 August 2026: The General Directorate of Endowments at Qatar’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has registered a new investment endowment comprising 58,988 shares in several companies listed on the Qatar Stock Exchange.
The shares were donated by a benefactor under the supervision of the General Directorate of Endowments in favour of the Waqf Al-Wuqoof (Endowment of Endowments) initiative under the Waqf Fund for Righteousness and Piety.
The contribution is the first endowment donation recorded for the benefactor in the directorate’s records. According to the report, endowed shares remain dedicated as endowment assets, while their returns are directed towards charitable purposes in accordance with the donor’s conditions.
Mohammed Abdullah Al Harami, Director of the Investment Department at the General Directorate of Endowments, said the contribution demonstrates the diversity of investment instruments that can form part of the endowment system.
He explained that income generated from financial assets can support various endowment funds and charitable purposes in accordance with donors’ conditions. The Investment Department develops investment plans for endowment assets and monitors their implementation following approval.
The department also manages investment portfolios in accordance with Shariah principles and professional standards, with a focus on generating sustainable returns while preserving the economic value of endowed assets.
Al Harami said the investment efforts support the Ministry’s objectives related to developing a sustainable endowment and zakat system, increasing endowment returns and maximising their social benefits.
The Waqf Al-Wuqoof initiative is based on reinvesting endowment returns to establish new endowments. According to the report, this approach allows returns from existing endowments to contribute to the creation of additional income-generating assets over time.
The model also provides for part of endowment income to be reinvested rather than being limited to immediate charitable spending, supporting the expansion of the endowment asset base and the continuation of its benefits across generations.
Industry Impact
The development highlights the use of listed shares as an endowment asset and the role of investment income in supporting charitable purposes. It also shows how the Waqf Al-Wuqoof model combines the preservation of endowed assets with the reinvestment of returns to expand the endowment base over time.
